De Bortoli Deen de Bortoli Vat 8 Shiraz 2010

De Bortoli Deen de Bortoli Vat 8 Shiraz 2010

The 2009 versiopn of this wine was very good value but this years is a little better. The medium bodied flavour profile starts with plums before moving to blackberries, chocolate pastilles and ending with spice. While there is only a nudge of drying tannins it is balanced by a kick of acidity and only a light wind of oak. A good wine that will please a lot of punters. Have a box stashed in the pantry so if you have unexpected guests you have something good to serve.

Tyrrells Ashman's Brut NV

Tyrrells Ashman's Brut NV

This tastes more like a prosecco than a champagne style sparkling with its light and easy flavours of apples, lemons and all things summer in style. An easy quaffer that will please many people but not the hardcore sparkling enthusiast.

De Bortoli La Bossa Sauvignon Blanc 2012

This is a 95 percent  Australian wine with 5 percent coming from New Zealand. You have to love the state of the Sauvignon market at the moment which allows for such wines top me produced. It is a win win for the consumer.

De Bortoli La Bossa Sauvignon Blanc 2012

The nose is ultra shy to begin with but soon flavours of passionfruit, snnow peas and lemon grass come to the fore. The flavours pass quickly on the palate which means I have to take another sip again. At under ten bucks this is perfect but I think I liked the 2011 more.

A bunch of De Bortoli entry level wines

De Bortoli La Bossa Chardonnay 2011

What do I really want out of an entry wine? Easy going and relaxed with fruit flavour that aren't over the top which is what you get with the La Bossa range. It isn't hard to comprehend and it is easy to like even though the complexity level isn't out of the world but nore is shouldn't at this price. Nice easy going BBQ wine that is for sure.

Windy Peak Pinot Noir 2011

Once again De Bortoli has produced a clean fruited and restrained wine with hints of twigginess and strong varietal character. The flavours are savoury with a slight bitterness on the mid-palate which increases the ability to have a second glass or maybe a third like I had last night. Don't get me started as I doing vintage, working full time and have a young family but it was the Windy Peak Pinot that I turned to and it made all the difference.

De Bortoli Emeri Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV

Fruit driven with a hint of yeast comes right after I opened the bottle. The candied flavours are nice but the palate is a bit short.

De Bortoli La Bossa Shiraz Cabernet Merlot 2011

No individual variety sticks out but they are all in the red end of the spectrum with a hint of twigginess thrown in. The wine is built for immediate comsumption and for the money it is not bad. It might not be the best but given the vintage it is pretty good.

Three sets of bubbles

None-vintage sparkling I believe are the best representation of what the house is all about.  The vintage variation gets blended away and the winemaker ends up producing the style that they are after. Now for the bottom of the range I am not sure what that looks like but for the big boys it can be very enchanting to get your hands on the NV as it gives a glimpse into what to expect.

Patritti Brut NV

There is a nice brut aroma that you would expect from a wine at about the 20 buck mark flowing from this  wine so I could sit back and smell this for a while before tucking in. There are those nutty zesty notes mixed with citrus and a richer element working from the front palate on. On the palate the wine fades but at this price this is a steal. Literally this beats wines at twice the price.

Tyrrell's Wines Old Winery Brut NV

The Old Winery wine is a little dilute but it has some fruitiness that works well. The wine seems light and lemony on entry but it turns sweet from just after the front palate. While the finish was dry, the wine seemed a bit narrow yet still had a bit of interest with the flavour profile.

Old Winery Brut

De Bortoli Emeri Pink Moscato NV

Turn up the sweetness and hung me when you are nude! This wine makes me want to run free in the meadows as the flavours of musk stick and candied strawberries run wild. It is more than the flavours as this wine tastes more grapey than it does winey but I guess that is the very low alcohol talking. Smash me now.

De Bortoli Sacred Hill Cabernet Merlot 2009

De Bortoli Sacred Hill Cabernet Merlot 2009

Masses of leafy blackcurrants on what is a very good entry for such a lowly priced wine. Add to the mix a little plum and chocolate and you get the spectrum of this one. The palate is pretty nice but it is a little to herbal and leafy for big marks but I would be happy to crank this out during the week. Actually at this price this is a steal! Under 5 bucks get puked!

De Bortoli La Bossa Merlot 2010 & Pinot Grigio 2011

The La Bossa wines are built to please upon release.

De Bortoli La Bossa Merlot 2010

Ultra twiggy and simple but does provide a nice amount of pluminess which allows me to move forward.  Really at this price point, all I am looking for in a wine is drinkability with flavours that are easy to follow with a nice balance between sweetness and savouriness. The wine even has a sourness to the tannin structure that works well with food. All in all, a nice wine to quaff down.

De Bortoli La Bossa Pinot Grigio 2011

Masses of sweet candied apples cascade from the glass from the word go. You remember the ones that you used to get at the show? They were bright red with a thick layer of candy hugging the apple with delight. I would spend the whole day licking that lovely crust off before I bite down on the slightly overripe apple that they inside.

Deen de Bortoli Vat 7 Chardonnay 2011

The Deen de Bortoli label is targeted towards the entry level market and is produced from fruit from both warmer and cooler climates.  This combination of warm and cool climate fruit is supposed to result in a wine that has richness yet still retains vibrancy.  Unfortunately 2011 was so cool that warm climate fruit was a scarce resource.

Deen de Bortoli Vat 7 Chardonnay 2011

Vintage condition in 2011 produced some very lighter style wines with plenty of acid structure. This wine, once it comes into contact with my tongue is a test amount to that but the flavours don’t really get past my front palate. There is a little lemon twist and salty nuts to begin with before a drop of peach juice makes an appearance but then that is it.  For the money this wine still offers some value and could work well at a BBQ.

La Bossa Sauvignon Blanc 2011

De Bortoli produces this wine with fruit from South Eastern Australia and a touch of New Zealand stuff thrown in.  I think this is a good marketing move as New Zealand produce some very popular drinking wines from this variety with a unique flavour profile.  This wine definitely tastes like it has a bit of New Zealander in it.

La Bossa Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Everything component in this wine comes in little boxes. A little of passion fruit riding on top of a swirl of snow pea purée before a dollop of gooseberry plops in at the end. Nothing takes over and dominates which makes this rather good, especially at this price point. If I had to get down to the nitty gritty then I would say that the flavours after the initial attack the flavours become a bit wishy washy but hay for under the ten buck mark, who cares.

Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz 2008

Wyndham Estate was established in 1828 which would have to make it one of the oldest wineries in Australia.  For some reason I think some things have changes since their inception.  This Shiraz is the 24th biggest selling wine in Australia and the 3rd biggest selling red wine.  Who thought Australians drank so much sparkling or white wine.

Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz 2008

The wine starts out with a little fly-spray action then moves to peppermint, stale chocolate and plum.  While the palate is dilute and rather broad it does provide some enjoyment for the price.

Lindeman's Bin 65 Chardonnay 2010

From a pure sales point of view this wine ranks up there with the best of them.  With the price war between the two big guys and the increase in cleanskins the price of this wine has gone south.  A winemaker that can put together such a large quantity of wine without any wine making faults is doing a great job.

Lindeman's Bin 65 Chardonnay 2010

This has impact! Melons and a little spice but it never really moves past that. While it is dilute through the mid palate and the length is short, at this price all I want is something to crack at a BBQ. At 5 bucks a bottle what did I expect.
