Cirillo Semillon 2009

Now my mate served this to me against the 05 Tyrrells HVD Semillon (93 pts) and asked me to judge them so here it is.

Cirillo Semillon 2009

This wine is very different from what I expected from Cirillo as they normally are amongst my favoured Barossa wines. What I got was a mix of fish sauce, dog hair, limes, crushed ginger and bath salt on a very long palate.  To tell you the truth I struggled with the flavours not the texture or the length and I hope this is a bottle that is not representative of the norm.

  1. Sounds a bit rough Josh. . . :/

Pretty hard to beat that 05 HVD, it's a beauty! I'm heading to the Barossa soon in search of good semillon, without diverting to Peter Lehmann, and I think I'll start with Burge Family Winemaker's....

  2. Chris the flavour profile was just a bit too weird for me. Does this sound like the wine i tried? "made from semillon vines planted in the 1850s and almost certainly the oldest in the world; is very intense and pure, with citrus and mineral drives not unlike top-quality hunter valley semillon; early picking and bottling spot on. Screwcap. 9.5% alc. Rating 95" James Halliday
Or I could have been having a wine wanker moment. If you are up in the Barossa give them a call as they make cracking wines. Burge Family Winemakers is a beauty as well. Love their olive hill SMG.
Or the artisans of the Barossa have opened a cellar door showcasing 7 unique producers. Not sure if they have a Semillon in the range but they make some beautiful booze.
