Dowie Doole Scarce Earth Shiraz 2010

Dowie Doole is not a winery that I have tried much of but I get the feeling that they have shares in a barrel company. This wine is picked from a block which is located just outside the main highway from Adelaide to Victor Harbour as you pass the entry into McLaren Vale.  This vineyard would be at some of the lowest elevation in the area and on grey and red alluvial soils which are some of the younger soils in the area.

Dowie Doole Scarce Earth Shiraz 2010

Oak, Oak and Oak are three of the main features of this wine but it does come off as polished and seductive. Under the oak is Dutch licorice and melted blackberries spooning with Hershey's chocolate and a leather whip.  My tasting companion called it a cat of nine tails as this wine was bombastic in my mouth. As there is already a leather characteristic I wouldn't be holding on to this as long as some of the other 2010s but it does provide comfort now if you are into a full sized Shiraz.  What is missing from this wine is the tannin structure.  It is there but there is a huge hole in it from the mid palate on.

Alcohol: 14.7%

  1. Hi Josh,
Great that you made it to the Scarce Earth launch. Hope you enjoyed the overall experience.
Thanks for your comments about our wine. A couple of points - yes it did look quite oaky - this is because the wine was only bottled the week before the Scarce Earth launch. It had very little time to settle down. We are telling all our customers to put it aside for a few months to let the oak settle in. The other point is we feel there are plenty of tannins there and the wine will be in for the long haul - now to around 2025.
We base this not only on our tasting of the wine but also the track record of the fruit from this vineyard - in the past sold to Tatachilla for Foundation Shiraz, Sparky Marquis and to Rosemount for Balmoral and more recently in our Reserve Shiraz (08 - 95 points Halliday etc).
Perhaps we could entice you to try another bottle (on us) but chuck it in the cellar for a few months.
    Best wishes,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on the scarce earth wine and I would be more than happy to look at the wine again. When I tasted it on the 18th of April the gentleman that served me didn't say that it had just been bottled so I agree that it wouldn't be the best time to evaluate it.
Once again thanks for taking the time to read my review and comment.

    Regards
