Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2007

The Brunnello clone of Sangiovese is said to be the best clone going around.  The Montalcino district is one of the warmest and driest areas within the larger Toscana area for growing Sangiovese which may mean that it is perfect for the warmer areas such as Barossa or McLaren Vale in South Australia.

Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2007

Brunello needs decades to show its best and this is no different. The palate and smell are two totally different things so I will start with the palate.  The flavours are locked up tight but they are deep dark and evil in nature yet they are in perfect balance with the bright core of acidity.  When I say it is a deep and dark wine I should clarify that with there is not an ounce of sweetness in the wine, just beautiful savoury flavours running a riot over my tongue.  Once the flavours linger for a while the tannins strangle the hell out of my mouth and that feels so good.  Now to the smell.  The first aroma was of fart, it was almost like someone had dropped one in my glass and run off.  Some would say silent and deadly could have been the style delivered by the culprit.
