Fiano comes from the area of Campania in the south of Italy.
The town of Avellino is home to the majority of Fiano in the world as there is
only about 150 hectares of the variety worldwide. The vines down this way are
generally bush vines which means that cropping levels are low. As the
temperature in this area is rather high, the vines that grow well are extremely well adapted to their sites. It is no wonder that Australia is
planting a few of these varieties. What Australia will need to look towards is
all the other varieties like Aglianico, Negroamaro, Gaglioppo, Greco di Tufo
and Greco di Bianco in the future as the temperature it set to rise again.
Coriole Fiano 2012
Coriole has been making Fiano for a fare while now but this
is the best one I have tried from them (Fiano 2011 89pts and 2010 90pts). The
integration of oak and vibrant flavours is quite stunning at this stage and you
still get that vibrant acidity that you would normal associate with this
variety. It is mouth-watering to say the least! There is texture and flavour
coming out of every orifice in this wine. It is complete! The flavours of
straw, honeysuckle, pears and lemon blossom are beautifully composed. I can’t help myself with this wine I just
want another glass.
