Matt Gant produces a whole load of Shiraz wines with a slant
of showing off what the Barossa can do best. This wine comes from the Ebenezer
district which can produce wines of depth, due to the lack of rainfall, but still
with notes of red-fruits. The soil types in the area range from heavy loam to
clay and the best wines come from the old vines due to their ability to
regulate themselves much better than the younger vines.
First Drop Fat of the Land Single Vineyard Ebenezer Shiraz 2009
Upon opening the wine smells of smoke and brandied plums.
These aromas are intoxicating so make sure that the wine sits in a big glass
for a while before you plunge head first into the vineous liquid. On the palate
the wine feels creamy and luscious which is normal for a wine that comes from a
year like 2009. At this stage the flavours are already shining through as the
oak is already imbedded in the wines body. While this makes the wine feel soft
and cuddly the nice tannins provide a gritty texture and refreshing dryness on
the back end of the palate. You could drink it now but I’d give it another few
years before I crack open another bottle.
