Coriole Vita 2009 + Pizza

Coriole has been growing Sangiovese in the Vales for the past 27 years but it was only in 2007 that they took the plunge and produced a reserve wine. The 2007 is a brilliant wine in the European style which is a little more dirty that this modern wine. This wine has a little cabernet which gives it a polished edge in its youth. The Vita isn’t made from a particular section of the vineyard but is rather a barrel selection.

I decided to pair this with a traditional Italian meal which you can either buy or make at home. The humble pizza must be one of the easiest meals to prepare and can suit any sort of person.

The dough is one of the most important things in a pizza so I’ll give you the recipe and you can go a head and put anything on it.

Pizza Dough

2 cups plain flour or 00 flour
3/4 warm water
1 packet dry yeast
1 teaspoon caster sugar

Mix yeast with warm water and sugar. Once yeast is activated add to flour and knead. Place in a bowl and cover with a tea towel and allow it sit in a warm area until doubled in size.

Coriole Vita 2009

The blackcurrant shines through at this early stage and it continues to do so for the first day or two.  The cabernet exhibits itself as spice, licorice and fresh tea leaves over those two days before a hint of dirty cherries, wild herbs and rust start to pogo stick in. This Sangiovese is one of the heaviest I have tasted from Australia and I can see why with the extra variety that has joined the show. I guess by having the two varieties that it will satisfy more people in the one glass. What has happened is that the quality of both varieties has shone through but it is only on the third day that you get to taste both. I would hold this for a few years to let the components meld together.
