D’Arenberg has set about showcasing the districts of McLaren Vale. This wine comes from the Sand Hills area which is located on the eastern area on what is the younger end of the spectrum for the soils. The sandy soils tend to do better in the colder years which is perfect for a year like 2010.
d’Arenberg Sand Hills Grenache 2010
I started tasting this wine on a day that was 32 degrees, which I don’t think suits red wines, but this looks stunning from the outset. There was no hint of heat, nor did the wine get above medium bodied. The palate just kept moving along, singing a song of joy and sophistication with flavours of perfumed dirt and bucket loads of red fruits shinning bright. It is the lightness of the wine that allows these flavours to pop out of the wine as the liquid hits my palate. None of the flavours or textures seem out of place, in fact it seems as the wine has a slipperiness to it that is rather delightful. The structure is rather large for a Grenache but that also seems to be in beautiful balance with all the components of the wine. At the moment the wine is locked up tight so I would give it a while in the cellar for it to show itself off.
