Elderton Riesling 2011

Riesling is one of the best value wines in Australia.  In many cases, with a bit of bottle age, they show a distinctive character of petrol.  Some people love this but personally I'm not a fan.  The research that is out there suggests that these petrol characters come from excessive levels of sunshine during the ripening period.  The German winemaking society has even gone as far as saying that the taste of petrol is a fault in their Rieslings.

The main driving force of this wine is petrol with only a hint of flowers and a nudge of minerals.  I was a little surprised to see the petrol character dominate this wine at such a young age.  Since those flavours dominated I really struggled to find the beauty in this wine.  That said, it is not a bad wine but it is meant for consumption now or over the next few years.
