La Spinetta Langhe 2008

The Langhe area of Italy is the main region for the viticulture of the Nebbiolo grape variety.  This area provides for the large proportion of the entree level wines for the region, with the sub regions of Barolo and Barbaresco being the leading lights.  As the area is rather mountainous the temperature are on the colder side with many climatic events each year testing the skills of each wine maker.  La Spinetta makes their wine in a modernist approach yet still retains the rustic charm of old.

La Spinetta Langhe 2008

I would have said you have to like tannin to love this but my dad, who loves Shiraz, went nuts over this.  There are brilliant waves of dried roses, potted flowers, dirty cherries, licorice weed and spice tumbling over my tongue.  The tannins kick in after you have taken a sip then they slowly build.....and build....and build.  For an entree level wine this would be hard to beat.  I love its cool swagger.
